Central Bank Payments Conference

Bangkok, Thailand | 15-17 March 2027

About the Conference

Technology is transforming payments faster than the institutional frameworks surrounding them. AI, tokenisation, stablecoins and interconnected digital infrastructure are reshaping how payments work – and who controls them, who bears the risk, and where responsibility ultimately lies – while geopolitical fragmentation is forcing a fundamental rethink of strategic dependencies on global networks and foreign-controlled platforms.

CBPC 2027 examines one fundamental question from different angles: what should the payments ecosystem of the next decade look like – and what role should central banks play in shaping it? Plenary sessions will frame the strategic choices these developments create, while interactive tracks let delegates explore practical implications, compare experiences across jurisdictions, and challenge conventional thinking.

Join the industry in the vibrant city of Bangkok, Thailand | 15-17 March 2027 for another not-to-be-missed edition of the Central Bank Payments Conference!

The 2026 Special Report is now available, featuring key discussions, insights, and outcomes from the event.

2027 Agenda Topics

Theme: Payments at a Crossroads – Sovereignty, Technology and the Changing Role of Central Banks

Payments are simultaneously becoming faster, more intelligent, more interconnected – and more politically important. What forces will reshape the industry over the coming decade? Where should markets lead, and where will policymakers intervene?

Payment sovereignty has moved from a largely theoretical debate to a strategic priority. Europe is pursuing greater autonomy; domestic payment schemes are emerging or being strengthened; countries are reconsidering dependencies on international providers; and geopolitics increasingly influences payment architecture. But how much sovereignty is desirable – or even achievable?

Central banks historically concentrated on monetary stability, oversight and wholesale infrastructure. That distinction is becoming increasingly blurred. Instant payment systems, CBDCs, digital identity, QR infrastructures and public payment platforms can place central banks much closer to consumers and businesses. How far should they go?

Rather than another G20-roadmap discussion, the session asks what the emerging architecture actually looks like. Can interconnected FPS networks fundamentally change cross-border payments? What happens when regional systems connect? And where do blockchain-based solutions, correspondent banking and global networks fit?

What forms of money will actually coexist in the future payment system? The discussion brings together CBDCs, commercial bank money, tokenised deposits and stablecoins, and considers monetary sovereignty, settlement finality, interoperability and financial stability. What forms of money will actually coexist in the future payment system? The discussion brings together CBDCs, commercial bank money, tokenised deposits and stablecoins, and considers monetary sovereignty, settlement finality, interoperability and financial stability.

AI, instant payments and increasingly sophisticated social engineering are changing the economics of fraud. Should liability models change? Should data sharing become mandatory? And what responsibilities should banks, PSPs, telecommunications companies, technology platforms and consumers carry?

Payments increasingly operate 24/7 while depending upon a small number of technology, cloud, telecommunications and infrastructure providers. What does systemic resilience mean when failure can originate outside the regulated financial sector? How much redundancy are we prepared to pay for? And do countries need genuinely independent fallback mechanisms – and can we continue to rely on cash as the ultimate contingency?

In this interactive closing session, panelists will make their case on critical questions and the audience will share their views through live polls. Should central banks operate retail payment infrastructure? Is payment sovereignty becoming more important than global harmonisation? Will stablecoins become mainstream payment instruments? Should data sharing for fraud prevention be mandatory? Is redundancy worth sacrificing efficiency for?
